Born in Kerala in 1971, he splits his time between here and there. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from Mumbai’s School of Art, and his splendid work is all over Mumbai, and other parts of India, as well as having been shown in Austria, the U.K., New York, and Italy. The work travels well, rich in metaphor and absolutely spectacular in design. Riyas Komu’s wood sculptures are terribly evocative, and also a bit disturbing, with large forms on wheels that beckon the viewer to examine the details, which reveal hidden stories and hidden truths. His paintings have similar effects, with visually stunning appeal that seem to excavate deeper truths in the heart of the artist as well as the viewer.
