Riyas Komu: Excavating Mumbai
Mumbai is one of the world’s great cities, with an enormously diverse and always interesting population making up its cultural landscape. It’s one of the longest continually inhabited places on the planet, giving it an extremely rich and dense history. Any visit to India is illuminating and fascinating, but seeing it from one of its 5 star Mumbai hotels offers a view of the amazing place from the lap of luxury. Waking up to the splendor of our spacious and magnificently decorated rooms offers a sense of rejuvenation that is almost impossible to describe. The meals are prepared by world-class chefs, offering local and international cuisine with enormous flair and style. It’s the perfect way to begin a day before enjoying all there is to see in the city.
Like most big cities, there is simply too much to see and do in one day, or even in one visit. Once the need to do it all is forgotten, there is time to enjoy every moment, and moments in Mumbai are filled with infinite possibilities. It’s always a good idea to set aside a day or two to do nothing but people-watch. The whole human drama plays itself out in front of you, and can give you a sense of the mysteries of the place. You can also get a splendid sense of this by looking at the local art. One of the more eye-catching sculptors, who works in many different kinds of media, is a young artist named Riyas Komu.
Born in Kerala in 1971, he splits his time between here and there. His bachelor’s and master’s degrees are from Mumbai’s School of Art, and his splendid work is all over Mumbai, and other parts of India, as well as having been shown in Austria, the U.K., New York, and Italy. The work travels well, rich in metaphor and absolutely spectacular in design. Riyas Komu’s wood sculptures are terribly evocative, and also a bit disturbing, with large forms on wheels that beckon the viewer to examine the details, which reveal hidden stories and hidden truths. His paintings have similar effects, with visually stunning appeal that seem to excavate deeper truths in the heart of the artist as well as the viewer.
