Rio’s Simbiotecnoise

without comments

Rio de Janeiro has one of the most exciting scenes for culture in the world today, and it’s also a fairly stunning place in terms of nature. Every year, tourists are drawn to the Rio de Janeiro hotels to enjoy some time on the beach, sample the food and drink typical of Carioca culture, and to see why the town attracts so many people across time and space. In many ways, it is one of the great ongoing experiments in human expression and experience. In many ways, it is also a chance to catch up on very broad cross-sections of world culture.

No trip here is ever complete, and there’s always more than meets the eye. Subsequent visits only seem to reveal that there’s more that was left out from the previous time, so that the curious tourists begin to feel their task is one of excavation. This is much the same task as the artists here. Working today, experiments in sound like Simbioptecnoise draws on pop culture and state of the art technology, but they’re also entirely immersed in the recent past. The movements that were made quiet in the 60s had to work their way into the underground, and are still emerging into the light of day, where the sun meets the waves, and everything starts to make sense. But only for a moment, and then the next trip starts to call.
