Artspaces in Frankfurt

Posted in Travel, music  by admin on December 14th, 2009

Frankfurt has the perfect balance between the hidden and revealed, offering curious visitors many opportunities to find their ideal version of the city.  It has many sides, and many facets, and there are plenty of surprises hidden in its side streets and under grounds, but the surface is fairly remarkable as well.  Being one of the few cities in Germany with skyscrapers, it has a very distinctive skyline, and the feel here is urban and exciting.  Visitors will find many places of interest, with galleries and shopping that are truly world-class, in an atmosphere that is easy to get around in, and very easy to get caught up in.

Many people from here learn English in schools, so it’s comparatively easy to find your way around, and there is also a lovely sense of hospitality.  In Frankfurt am Main, hotels appeal to a wide cross-section of guests, and they’re always helpful and friendly.  Some of the more luxurious accommodations go far beyond the high bar that’s already been set for making cozy comforts to travelers.  When you’re out in the city, there’s always something wonderful and new.  There are also institutions that have been here for a little while, waiting to be discovered.  It might be a stretch to call multi.trudi an institution, but it does have a name which is well-respected in the underground art community here.

It began in 1997 by Stefan Beck, a media artist, who still runs the show more or less.  It’s near the main train station, but is still hard to find, and the artists here prefer to keep it that way.  Their aesthetic and approach is very similar to Freundschaft, a local music collective that has played here before.  The events they hold are not for a wide public, but for a select group of art lovers who find their way here with the intention of participating in the events in a meaningful way.  Sound art and media art are usually at the center of the line-up, and it’s a fantastically intimate space where your role as a spectator has to stay at the door while you become a creator along with the rest of the community.
