Farming near Harrisburg, PA

Posted in Travel  by admin on October 27th, 2009

This January we are heading into Harrisburg for the Pennsylvania Farm Show. We just bought us this property about two hours from Harrisburg. There is 15 acres along a deep creek in a small valley in the southern Allegheny mountains. The land is very fertile and has plenty of water that is why we bought it. Our plan is to build an organic farming business on the site.

We bought the farm with a small rustic house heated by a wood burning stove. needing plenty of love and attention. There is a good sized barn that is actually in very good shape, a chicken coupe filled with chickens and a grove of apple, pear and walnut trees and a bramble of raspberries and black berries. Over the summer we moved in and began by cutting down and cutting back any of the over growth. The fields were six feet tall with grasses and weeds, the trees hung to the ground and all the bushes were scraggly and out of control. While cutting back we were also putting up fences and repairing them through out the summer. I think we are now are ready to get some goats, hogs, a cow and other animals now we have secured places for them. We will wait till spring before getting any animals.

Today we were getting some of the fields we will be planting next spring turned over in preparation for planting. The old man we bought the farm from had not worked the farm in about a decade so there is a lot to do to get it up and running again. In the spring we will be planting corn, bean, broccoli and lettuce that will be enough to start with. Tomorrow I will be pruning the pear and apple trees before the winter sets in and hopefully we will get good crops from them next year.

But now I need to get our rooms book at hotels Harrisburg so we have a place to stay for the Pennsylvania Farm Show.
