Enjoying an Garden

Gardens have distinct appeals to most people. Many are draw to the act of cultivating a garden, to planting, growing, and caring for the various plants and flowers. Others are drawn to the beauty of the garden as an environment to enjoy. Of course, there are people who enjoy both gardening as an activity and appreciating a garden. There are many things that people can do to make it easier to enjoy the simple pleasures associated with a garden.

The first is to carefully plot a garden so that it provides plants and flowers year round — or as close to year round as is possible in a given climate. While fallow times serve a purpose in the growth cycle of many plants, few people can enjoy looking at or lounging in a brown, lifeless garden. The garden plan should also take into account the views it creates from a variety of angles. People gazing at the garden through windows, while sitting on a porch or patio, or even driving or walking by a home should all be offered something beautiful to see. This would include installing outdoor garden lighting so that the beauty can be appreciated at night as well as by day.

It’s also a good idea to provide benches, tables, or other seating options within a garden itself, if it is large enough. This will attract people to step into the garden and get the full experience of smell and touch as well as sight. Extensive gardens that incorporate shrubs, bushes, and even trees may also include bird feeders and baths to attract wildlife to the area. Happy birdsong is the piece d resistance for many garden lovers.
