Living Tex-Mex: San Antonio

Posted in Food and Drink  by admin on August 16th, 2010

The history of San Antonio is complexly intertwined with the histories of both countries that share the border near this most dazzling city. It’s one of the more puzzling things about the city, and also one of its most attractive qualities. Here, cultures do exist simultaneously like very few other places in the world, and they merge together in wonderful ways. If culture isn’t a big draw to the city, then the food certainly is.

The food may not be the biggest factor in considering looking into San Antonio Real Estate , but it very well should be. The Tex-Mex flavors that are specific to this location have been drawing fans from all over the world for over a century now. Since the end of the 1800s, when women started selling green chiles in the market, and putting new twists on the flavors of the local food, it’s been a tradition here, and one that’s still very much in evolution.

It can be found in other cities where the combination of tastes has been copied and re-made for their local population. The specific mix in San Antonio, however, and the manner in which these flavors are protected by the loyalty of the city’s big eaters, is something that simply can’t be found anywhere else. It’s an unfolding adventure, with gravy on top.

A Bit of the Ukraine in the East Village

Posted in Arts, Food and Drink, Travel  by admin on January 8th, 2010

One of the few absolutes about life, is that you never know what small event will change the rest your life forever.  This happened when the Tom Birchard, owner of the Ukrainian restaurant, Veselka, in the East Village met a girl forty years ago at a college fraternity party.  How does a young man from New Jersey, end up owning one of the most famous and authentic Ukrainian restaurants in New York?  By learning the recipes from the Ukrainian girl he met at the Rutgers University party so many years ago.

Veselka began as a combination newsstand, community center and a canteen in 1954, and was run by the girl’s father.  When her father died, Birchard took over the business and through the years it has gradually become a restaurant and a performance art space all in one.  Now Birchard has become, much to his surprise, and Honorary member of the Ukrainian-American society, a leader for his community and a patron of the world of performance art.  There are many incredible restaurants in Manhattan, and for many years Veselka has been serving not only wonderful dishes such as thick porridge called kutya, pierogies or potato dumplings, and various delectable dishes of root vegetables and pork…but has been serving up some of the finest and cutting edge performance art shows and poetry readings in the city.

This has become a counterculture hub, and many of the performers and patrons have been loyal to Birchard and his business for many, many years.  You may find yourself enjoying a production of “King Lear”, or you may find yourself experiencing a performance of “Honey Dance”, or a vaudeville show performed in Yiddish.  This is an eclectic meeting place for the multi-racial, and multi-cultural neighborhood that is the East Village. Food and fine entertainment, some of the best of the best New York has to offer is found in this little corner bistro.

Singapore Tips on Wedding Caterers

Posted in Food and Drink, Travel  by admin on December 17th, 2009

When hiring a Singapore wedding caterer, there should be little confusion or hassle. Hiring a wedding catering Singapore company, should be a simple task performed near the start of the planning process. Taste testings are very encouraged, with all the other things you need to do when planning a wedding, taste testing is the only trial run with which you’ll get before enjoying the cuisine at the wedding reception. To be able to keep everything running smoothly, there are some very simple taste testing options to go by.

Most times you’ll only meet the chefs representative, if this is the case, ask if it’s possible to pay a complement to the chef. Positive feedback will always work in your favor. Always bring a trusted friend to the taste testing, they will be very helpful in selecting the right foods. A wedding planner also would be very helpful during this process. When sampling the foods, you’ll be presented with many options, so it’s important to remember to pace yourself so as to enjoy each item. Only take small bites, one or two is really all that’s necessary. If you have a favorite type of food, feel free to discuss this preference with the cater. Your caterer will actually find this very helpful for the planning stages. Also mention any ingredients you do not want in the dishes, especially if you know some of your guests have food allergies. If your are a vegetarian, ask if there’s a vegetarian option for all the recipes and also be aware that most of your guests will not be vegetarians, so the friend you bring along for the taste testing should not be a vegetarian, so that they may taste the non-vegetarian samples for you.

When actually tasting the foods, look for signs of freshness and quality. Even if your budget is limiting, the caterer should not skimp out on the best ingredients. Also, ask the cater to serve you the samples the same way it will be served at your wedding, like if the food is server over warmers or buffet style. Even though taste testing does not pertain to the attentiveness of the caters staff, pay close attention to how they operate, such as communication and fluidity of movement. Remember the cater should provide the waitstaff as well if other arrangements have not been made.

All these tips will only enhance your wedding experience and make sure that your wedding guests will have a great time.
