The Palace of Nations is located in Geneva, Switzerland and is one of the city’s iconic and impressive politically based cultural landmarks. The building was built between 1929 and 1936 to serve as the head of the League of Nations. Since 1926 it served as the United Nations Office in the city after the UN Secretary General signed and agreement with the Swiss government. However, Switzerland did not officially become a member of the United Nations until 2002 and it was perhaps the country’s recognized political neutrality that first drew interest there.
Geneva receives numerous visitors from across the world every year and in addition to all of the amazing entertainment options, cultural landmarks and attractions as well as the great museums that are found throughout the city, the Palace of Nations, or officially the Palais des Nations, remains one of the most popular and intriguing places to visit. Information on this building as well as most of the other cultural attractions in the city can be found at the front desk of most of the fine resorts and hotels in Geneva .
The design and construction of this building was originally established after a competition was held to create its plan and design. This took place in the 1920s and about 377 architects entered the competition. Ultimately there were five architects who were behind the winning design and they were selected to collaborate on the plan that would become this building. The building is located in the Palais Park, which was donated to the city of Geneva by Gustave de Revilliod de la Rive. His 1890 gift came with a few conditions and these guaranteed that the park would always be accessible to the public, and that peacocks should roam freely on the grounds. Beautiful views of the French Alps are available in the park and from the Palace of Nations, which also overlooks Lake Geneva.
