Get Ready for Restaurant Week in NYC!

without comments

What is one of the greatest things, of many great things, about the city of Manhattan?  Is it the wonderful selection of 5 star New York hotels?   Is it shopping on 5th Avenue at the famed Tiffany’s Jewelry store?  Is the Empire State Building or the horse and carriage rides through Central Park?  Okay, there are many great things about this city, but only two times a year, once in the months of January-February and then later in the summer, June and July, it is restaurant week in the Big Apple.

This is a chance to experience some of the finest dishes, prepared by the finest chefs, in the finest restaurants of New York, for a fraction of the usual prices.  It offers a chance for people to enjoy what may typically be just out of financial range.  Many cities have festivals of food, such as the Taste of Chicago, but in Chicago the festival takes place in Grant Park, which is great.  But it is not the same as the full dining experience you will find in say, Charlie Trotter’s.  The service and the hospitality is part of the culinary experience, the fine white linen table cloths and the waiters ever ready to fill your wine glass.  It is a luxury that, especially in this day and age, many can simply not afford…except during Restaurant Week.

It is not only the chance to dine in the tried and true, the famous establishments of the city, but a time to try out the new restaurants and perhaps to find a new favorite.  Some of the restaurants offer not only the initial discount, but complimentary gift certificates for a return visit.  Not only is the food menu discounted during this festival, but quite often so too are the selections from the wine lists.  I know that when I visit New York, my hunger will be well taken care of, be it in Little Italy or the streets of Chinatown, but for me this often involves the smaller, less expensive venues.  However, in a few weeks I will know what it is like to dine like the fortunate dine, and I am looking forward to it with a tummy that is already beginning to grumble.
