Ajanta and Ellora Caves of Mumbai
Mumbai is a collection of islands, seven islands to be exact, and they are fast becoming one of the most populated and metropolitan of the cities of India. Maharashtra is the capital of Mumbai , and is also the financial capital of the entire country, and is known to be one of the cities on the islands that never closes. For nighttime fun, this is the place to be as the beaches, the night clubs and the restaurants offer services twenty-four hours a day. There is shopping to be done in the many markets, small bazaars and unique boutique shops. Being centrally located as Mumbai is, makes it possible to take many excursions from the city, day excursions or trips that last a few days.
The tourism industry and the hotels in Mumbai supports the travel away and back to the city and they offer a number of tours and deals when you are looking to explore. Some popular day trips are to some of the historical sites or Museums, such as the Tomb of Haji Ali and the Gateway of India, or the Prince of Wales Museums. Beach trips are also very popular to the beautiful Juhu, Manori or Marve. For those interested in the anthropological history of the region trips to Elephanta Island and Aurangabad. One of these trips that should not be missed is the trip to the caves Ajanta and Ellora.
The caves have recently been named as World Heritage sites. There are twenty-nine caves at the Ajanta site, and thirty-four caves at the Ellora site. All of the caves are Buddhist temples that were cut out of the rock and they offer an intriguing look into Buddhism and into history of the city of Mumbai . Some of the caves are filled with ancient sculptures and wall paintings, wonderfully preserved. Located close to other points of interest, a short trip from the caves to the Waghora river or a hike through the Sahyadri hills will be the perfect end to this day trip out of Mumbai.
