This region is home to a spicy Lao based cuisine of cooking that differs in style and spice from the Bangkok style of cooking in the mid region. The mountains of the north region are frequently shrouded in clouds and cool mists. Snow can fall here in the winter. The north region borders Mynamar and can at times have violence spilling over from Mynamar. Although this is rare visitors to the area should be aware of the possible volatile nature of the area and inquire about conditions ahead.
