Mimpi in Bali

Posted in Travel  by admin on September 30th, 2009

Bali is a place of many enchantments.  One of Indonesia’s most visited islands, it has lost none of the magnetic appeal it has always held for world travelers.  The rich combination of culture and nature here are unlike any other place on the planet.  The beaches are magnificent and exhilarating, offering a splendid sense of timelessness that is absolutely perfect for experiencing the rest of Bali.  The local culture is a fascinating blend of philosophies and spiritual systems, which inspires many artistic forms that appeal and baffle other artists and art-lovers all over the world.  One of the greatest ways to experience the island is at a beach hotel. Bali is connected to the sea in many ways, and not just physically, and it’s a fabulously exotic way to experience an exotic place.

Our hotels are chosen not only for their excellence in service and hospitality, but in their ability to reflect and inspire a slower pace.  You’ll feel a splendid rejuvenation while you’re here, and relax your way into many new adventures that will make memories that last for many years to come. Bali has something spectacular to offer for travelers of all ages, with natural wonders and fantastic temples that will keep everyone smiling.  Bali has a long history of performance, whose shadow puppet performances caught the attention of one of the great theatrical minds of the century, Antonin Artaud, who based a theory around the art, even though he misunderstood it entirely due to issues of translation.

Some of those issues are still very much present today, but there are more performers who are carefully presenting works to western audiences with cultural differences in mind, and there are also fantastic cross-cultural collaborations like the Worcester, Massachusetts Holy Cross Theatre Group’s performance of Mimpi.  This was a collaboration between the U.S. director Lynn Kremer and Balinese choreographers Desak Suarti Laksmi and I Nyoman Catra.  This was a collaboration that resulted in many performances, here and in the U.S.  This dance-drama about a man looking for his soul mate took on universal themes in extremely particular cultural styles, to make a kind of performance that speaks to the possibilities of cross-cultural collaborations in the world today.

Getting a two person hot tub

Posted in Health, Home  by admin on September 28th, 2009

My wife and I have been thinking about getting a 2 person hot tubs installed on the patio. We think this would be the best size for our new place as we want to have room for a pond and some gardening on the patio too. We now live in a condo and have a really nice and private patio. The patio could fit a smaller hot tub, a two person hot tub is about the biggest we could go there for size and have room for a small fish pond and a little gardening. It has been a while that we have been thinking and dreaming about getting a hot tub, now we are moved and with some research and investigation I found no reason not to move ahead with getting a hot tub. The major consideration was going to be size at first, I didn’t realize how compact some models are. With that issue resolved now we need to figure out if I will go with a permanently installed hot tub or get a portable hot tub. There are pros and cons there. The expense and logistics of running the plumbing and high voltage wiring may end up deciding for us that we go with a portable variety. We will get our contractor friend to give us an estimate as to how much that will be. Once we get the estimates we will know if I want to go with a portable hot tub or a permanently installed one.

Either way I am looking forward to being able to wash away muscle tension in my own private hot tub. At the end of a long day getting into the hot water and letting the water from the jets message my aching tense muscles. It sounding too good to be true. But in fact it looks like it will become a reality in the not to distant future.

Hot Tubs for Better Sleep

Posted in Health  by admin on September 17th, 2009

There’s no doubt that water has enormous benefits on our health, whether we’re drinking it or submerging ourselves in it.  It makes life better, and makes living easier.  Quite literally!  The benefits of a hot tub are too many to list, and new discoveries reveal new benefits all the time.  With our hot tubs, you are getting the most advanced technology around, with multiple jets to increase the power of hydrotherapy.  So, while you are getting the newest technology, you are also working with some of the oldest therapeutic treatments around.  And of course, hot tubs are not just for the purposes of rehabilitation, but are one of the hottest social magnets in contemporary times.  Hot tub parties are fun, whether it’s a group of old friends gathering for a meal on a lovely evening, or a more intimate night when it’s just the two of you.

The benefits on the human body are fantastic.  There is an increase in circulation, a lowered blood pressure, and an absolutely wonderful sense of well-being.  And one of the greatest benefits, it turns out, is that hot tubs are one of the best ways to relax before sleep, and have even been recommended by the National Sleep Foundation.  This means that science is catching up to what our intuiton already told us, that a gloriously relaxing experience can be healthy, and help us live better lives.

There are many keys to getting a healthy night’s rest, and a soak a bit before bedtime is certainly a way to relax.  But enjoying a hot tub before sleep has other benefits that add up to better rest.  Making it a part of your routine not only has the effect of calming your mind, it also affect you on a deeply cellular level.  When the water in your body is submerged in a temperature similar or warmer to its own, there is a kind of equilibrium that you can reach, which has wonderful healthy benefits all around.  It also tells your body that it’s time to sleep, since your body recognizes repetition.  If you have to choose one ritual for every singe day, soaking in a hot tub is not a bad choice at all.  And everyone needs a rest!

Business in Delhi

Posted in Travel  by admin on September 15th, 2009

Our last business trip to Delhi, India was an excellent one. Our Delhi best hotels was one of the nicest we have stayed in during all our trips to India. The staff greeted us as if we were old friends. Were genuinely concerned that we like or room and were comfortable. There concern was almost annoying as every time passing through the lobby we were asked a barrage of questions regarding our stay and how we were enjoying. Their graciousness was so genuine I could not just walk past and ignore them, instead each time engaging in conversation. The staff offered a lot of suggestions on where to eat, what to do in the limited free time we had and where were good places to relax. All in all I have to say we were very happy with our hotel. That and the fact out meetings were a success we had a very good trip.

At first it didn’t look as if business would go well. We were looking to place a larger order of stone beads and jewelry than we had ever done previously. Wanting to place the order for everything from the same factory we were hoping for a discount on the prices we had received previously. At the beginning the negotiations were not going well and it looked as if we were not going to be successful in getting the discount we had hoped to negotiate. After drawing a hard line and threatening to take our business else where we gained some movement in the negotiations. Happily we did get a discount, not nearly as large as we has hoped however it was a discount and we were pleased.

Once all that was done we had two days to hang out and explore. Delhi is a crowded city and not easy to get around in with the beggers, animals, carts, cars and trucks all packing into the streets. At the advice of out gracious hosts at the hotel we were directed to a near by temple. Spending several hours there exploring the grounds and gardens and getting an understanding of the history it was time to head back to the hotel and call it a day.

Healing an Injury with Water Therapy and Hot Tub Spas

Posted in Health  by admin on September 14th, 2009

Every injury is different, obviously.  And every person has a weakness in their physical body that is different, obviously.  For myself, it is the ankles.  I broke one one, and ripped the ligaments in the other, a few times.  These consistent injuries were the result of a combined effort of life, or rather not the efforts of life, but just part of life, the parts being ballet dancing and the desire to learn how to surf in Laguna Beach.

At sixteen years of age, I managed to break my ankle in the crash of a wave in the Pacific Ocean.  It was a case of putting my weight on the outside edge of the ankle, thus twisting it inward and cracking the bone of the talus, the joint.  Being a 16 year old at the beginning of a beach vacation, I said nothing to the adults.  And being a 16 year old coming home and returning to dance class, I said nothing.  The ankle went from black, to blue to normal in color, but not in size.  The sports trainer at my school utilized hydrotherapy.

For thirty minutes each afternoon, my leg was immersed in ice water, then put into a warm water spa, much like those found nowadays at choosehottubsdirect.com.  This hot and cold water therapy is very good for injured muscles, however the trainer did not know that the bone had been broken.  I was put into a cast a few months later, once my mom actually saw the injured ankle.  ‘Twas the size of a big orange, or a small grapefruit.

Years later, a similar situation occured with the ankle of my other foot.  Was in a dance class, came down from being somewhere in the air, on that outside-side of the foot.  Skin was taken by the floor, as well as the rest of my body being taken by the floor, and the ankle swelled up immediately.  Being a bit older at the time, I had X-rays taken right away, and while no bone was broken, the ligaments were torn.

This form of injury is often more painful and more slow to heal, for they do not put you in a cast, unless some bone has been broken.  So what did I do?  I turned to water therapy, again.  The alternation of hot and cold, from a hot spa treatment to a cold soak.  Everyday.  This is one way to jump start circulation, it is the forced dilation and constriction of the blood vessels. It will push the blood to pump and the oxygen to flow. This is just one way that hot tub spas tend to heal the wounds of everyday life.

Atma Alam in Langkawi

Posted in Travel  by admin on September 14th, 2009

In the popular imagination, Malaysia is a rather mythic place, with tropical mysteries and exotic splendor.  There is some truth to this, of course, but Malaysia is also a fascinating country with a rich and complicated history that keeps visitors coming back, year after year, to enjoy the place behind the image.  There are exciting and vibrant urban centers here, with people from many cultures, languages, and traditions making up its unique fabric.  For pure tropical paradise, however, the place to visit is Langkawi.  Hotels here cater to the tourist’s imagination, providing a luxurious backdrop to an enchanting place.  Our hotels are selected for their excellent service and gracious design, offering a lovely place to rest your head after a lovely night on the town.

Our hotels also offer splendid choices to suit your tastes and your budget.  They are in the heart of Langkawi, providing a hospitable place to call home, while situating you close to the beaches.  Langkawi is one of those rare places in the world that lives up to its mythic image, with amazing biodiversity that has enchanted human beings here for many, many generations.  The display of human creativity here is present in the batik work, and an excellent place for the shopping tourist is Atma Alam, a batik village, where this traditional form of dying cloth is a centerpiece.

Batik is something that’s been in the local culture before written history.  The artform, which uses wax with the dying of cloth to make spectacular and intricate patters, probably came here from India.  The traditional way of making batik only uses three colors, indigo, dark brown, and white, to represent three Hindu gods, Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.  At Atma Alam one can see a vast array of colors used to make splendid examples of contemporary art, ready for purchase.  One can also participate in batik workshops here, and make their own designs, and also see unique oil paintings by co-founder Azahari Khalid Osman.  Roshada Yusof is the other co-founder here, and her work is the main attraction, introducing tourists from around the world to this contemporary version of an ancient art form.

San Antonio Drive

Posted in Travel  by admin on September 9th, 2009

I have been meaning to take some time off and get away. I really enjoy driving so I am planning on a very long road trip. Driving is a meditative experience for me, driving on the open road. I especially like driving the south west with the vast expanses of space and magnificent views and wide open spaces. The trip from here to there is about one thousand miles, about a 14 hour drive total. I am thinking of taking three day for the drive so I can take my time and not have to push myself too hard. Heading down to Tucson over to El Paso and across Texas to San Antonio. I went on line and booked a room at the best San Antonio hotels I could find. The would be the only thing I will book for the trip before departing. When driving I like to be able to be free from schedules and restraints. I like to be able to take my time and stop if I care to or keep going if I am in the mood to drive. Not having reservations lined out for me gives me this freedom. I am guessing the first night I will stay in El Paso. There I will probably stay for part of the day to visit with old friends then get back on the road to San Antonio early afternoon. Driving across Texas can be challenging there are a lot of long stretches of highway across very flat land and the road barely has a curve in it. But with the right music and snacks and an occasional stop here and there the flat expanses are doable. Any way the drive will be long, but I will find it relaxing, I love to see the landscape change from desert to mountain to rolling hills to plains.

A few short days in Dubai

Posted in Travel  by admin on September 9th, 2009

My girlfriend and I stopped in Dubai for three days and two nights. We were on our way to Pakistan coming from the United States. We planned the Dubai stopover, because a friend of mine who works at one of the top luxury hotels Dubai UAE  is world renown for, offered us a great break on the price of a room. This wonderful gesture proved to be very convenient and valuable for us. Not only did my friend meet us at the airport when we arrived, but he drove us around and showed us the usual places, like the Palm Jumeirah, the Burj and various other well known resorts. He took us to shopping malls and some very interesting other sites in Dubai.

What he also did for us, was to arrange a desert safari I had no idea my friend was this fantastic, but now I’m for ever grateful that he is my friend. We also got to meet his family, who settled down in Dubai for about thirty years now. After resting for a few hours, back at our half-priced hotel room, we ventured out to the Dubai city mall. As my friend had to work, he let us take his car anywhere we wanted to go. As we drove from the hotel, the city seemed like it was swallowing us whole with a rather thick haze, which was told to us as just being dust. The road were so wide, which made getting around easier than we thought. We saw many shiny new buildings and construction cranes on either side of the road. When we arrived at the mall, we went directly to the food court for lunch. We recognized many of the food court restaurants, including Krispy Kreme and KFC, but we decided to go for the Middle-Eastern cuisine at a Lebanese place. The food was delicious and cheap.

I went to a store in the mall to buy something special for my wonderful friend who made our trip to Dubai special and memorable. I hope he likes elephants.

One of the fastest ways of getting to know a culture is through its culinary traditions.  Since eating is one of the central social activities among people, and the language is somewhat universal, history and social structures can be known through the food.  As a way of exploring South Africa, taking a class at the Wicked Food Cooking School will certainly give a view to another South Africa, and will be entertaining and delicious as well!  The classes are approximately four hours long, and there is a wide variety of choices available.  You can learn Italian, Thai, and Middle Eastern cooking techniques with local flair, or focus on South African cuisine, with its heady combination of traditional African, European, and Indian influences.  Billed as an experience that takes less energy than a day on the golf course, this is a marvelous option for ways of spending a day in Johannesburg.
