American journalist Roxana Saberi was released from a Tehran, Iran prison this month. After spending over four months in one of the perhaps most notoriously unfair prison systems on the map of the world, the Northwestern University graduate will return to the United States map as soon as possible according to her lawyers.
Her original eight year sentence was trimmed down to a two year suspended sentence. A suspended sentence means that if she commits another crime her record will be updated.
Saberi was charged with collecting and passing on information to U.S. intelligence officials. After her arrest she was interrogated for weeks and convicted after only an hour long trial. Her sentence has been reduced, but the espionage charge still stands in her conviction. She was detained initially not for her alleged espionage charges, but for buying alcohol, which is prohibited in Iran.
The appellate court ruled that the Iran Court applied the wrong article of the penal court, that plus the political pressure most likely led to the sentence being reduced.
Saberi is now free to leave the country and return to the US map, the turnaround of decision from the court was said to be abrupt.
This case has become a diplomatic turning point for talks between Iran and the United States. The move to release Saberi was seen as good public relations for both parties involved.
This is not the first American Iran has detained. In October a California State University at Northridge student was detained for being part of a women’s rights campaign. Her charges were later dropped, but she, Esha Momeni, is still not allowed to leave Iran.
One has to wonder why Saberi got the preferential treatment, most likely because she is a journalist. It has to be disheartening for Momeni to still be unable to leave Iran,( while Saberi does.

The Fine Arts Society in Mumbai began in 1962 and was started by a group of social progress minded music enthusiasts. Their particular focus was on classical music, dance and drama. They had their first meeting in a garage, and their first program took place one year later. Membership in this organization is considered to be a prestigious element in one’s life. It is well respected and the Society continues to be at the forefront of community and cultural service institutions in and around Mumbai. It began as a service that would foster the creative development of young musicians and dancers, as well as other fine arts. This included a major educational intention for the group that included establishing academies and schools that would focus on the performing arts. The Society has become extremely influential in the Mumbai arts scene and tourists who are staying in one of the hotels Mumbai India should see this reflected in their exploration of the culture.
The first Annual Festival of Music, Dance and Drama took place before packed crowds in 1964. After this event, membership in the Society grew quickly, and they began to be recognized as a cultural force. They wanted an auditorium of their own and in 1990 they had begun to develop their multipurpose complex. It was inaugurated in 1993 by His Excellency Shri P.C. Alexander, the Governor of Maharashtra. The Society is interested in more than simply bringing greater awareness to performance arts and focusing on education. They also organize concerts, dramas, conferences, festivals, dances and exhibitions to advance the cause of classical music and the fine arts. In addition, part of their original intention was focused on health care. They sought to establish and operate diagnostic health care facilities and participate in medical research. This was an extremely ambition intention for the group of music lovers and the early development of the Society. It also accounts for some of the prestige and respect the Society has been accorded. Some of the early trail blazing group members are still active in the Society’s affairs.

The sculptures that line the banks of the Singapore River are known for the stylistic diversity, illustrating the history of the rise of Singapore from a modest fishing village, to the internationally known business and tourism mecca that the city has become today. Set with the backdrop of the hustle and bustle, the busy city streets, the sky scrapers and the charming here-and-there boutique hotel, Singapore has the history of the people laid out in bronze and symbolism, right there by the river.
One of the main contributors to this outdoor exhibit is Singaporean sculptor, Chong Fah Cheong. Chong is well known throughout the country, and the rest of the world as well, for his iconic, often whimsical, portrayals of the lives of those he sculpts. And while Chong does create abstract works, those along the river are life sized and realistic. One of the pieces contains five figures, of boys jumping into the river for a swim. These sculptures have been known to turn heads, as spectators really need a second look to make sure that they are not seeing real people jumping into the river. This piece illustrates his love for the joy of life, and for the joy the river has provided the people of Singapore throughout the history of the growth of the nation. His, “People Fishing” illustrates that at one time, every day life was not filled with stress and work. It serves to remind those who pass by, that simple pleasures of life are so very important.
Another sculptor exhibited along the river walk is Dr. Aw Te Hong. His piece illustrates the historical interactions between merchants and local tradesman. It also honors the hard work of those working along the river, loading goods onto boats and carts. The piece titled “From Chettiars to Financiers” depicts the change of the systems of banks and commerce. Locals loaning goods, services and finances to each other and then the transition to the big business and financial institutions of modern times.
The abstract pieces along the river include the works of Fernando Botero and Salvador Dali. Botero’s piece, “Bird” symbolizes joy, the desire for harmony, optimism and peace. And Dali, his piece is titled “Homage to Newton”. This is one of Dali’s finest bronzes, and sits just outside the entrance to the Overseas Bank Building. A ball falls from the hand of the figure, which symbolizes the moment Isaac Newton was inspired by the apple falling from the tree, the discovery of gravity. His piece is like a skeleton, with an open chest revealing a heart suspended, and an open skull…this signifies how important it is for humans to remain, throughout all that life brings, with an open heart and an open mind. Necessary not only for discoveries to be made in the natural or the scientific world, but for success in all endeavors.

We are a month away from the French Open, the 2ndof four annual Grand Slam international tennis tournaments. This competition in Paris is the most challenging to players who rely on a strong serve (think Pete Sampras and Roger Federer, neither of whom has ever won the French Open, due to the clay courts, which slow down the ball and cause a higher bounce than grass courts. Running from May 24th to June 7th, this prestigious event offers many promising performances. Britain’s top-ranked 21 year-old sensation, Andy Murray, is coming off an impressive showing in Monte Carlo.
Another strong contender, the Serbian Novak Djokovic, has risen quickly since he began playing tennis professionally in 2004, and is powerful and consistent on clay courts. But the drama and excitement of 2009’s tourney will likely belong to the match-up between the world’s number 1, Switzerland’s Roger Federer, and number 2, Rafael Nadal of Majorca, king of the clay court.
The women’s competition is anyone’s game. Some say it is Serbian Ana Ivanovic’s to win, but she has a tendency to lose the game in her head, and she will meet strong competitors in Venus and Serena Williams. In 2008, Serena won the US Open and Venus won Wimbledon. Though expectations for her performance were high, Russian Maria Sharapova’s shoulder problems may eliminate her as a contender.
Whether a newcomer or a veteran comes away with a win, the 2009 French Open promises to be a great battle on the clay.

Water sports are definitely the most common outdoor activity on the small Mediterranean Island of Ibiza. Hiking and other activities are also frequently engaged in, and one of the most inviting local sports is golf. There are two golf courses on the island, and while that may not be the main reason most people choose to visit, it is certainly popular among locals and visitors often discover the pleasures of the views and the beauty of the open ranges. Guests staying in 5 star hotel Ibiza will have no difficulty in accessing information on courses and renting equipment for this rewarding sport. Many hotels also assist in arranging for transportation.
Both of the island’s courses are located within close proximity to each other in the county Santa Eularia. They are the Ibiza Golf Club and Roca Llisa Golf Club. They are currently merging to form one large golfing complex. The Ibiza Golf Club was established in 1991 and is an 18 hole, par 72 course. It is located in beautiful and tranquil country scenery and offers great views of the Mediterranean. Fortunately for golfers who typically worry about landing a ball in the sand pit, or pond, the sea is far enough away that it doesn’t make for easy mishaps. Though, fetching a ball out of the coastal waters would be more of a pleasure than a task for the golfer. The course has an onsite hotel, restaurant and pro-shop, which caters to the golf enthusiasts. The Roca Llisa Golf Club is a smaller, 9 hole course and driving range. This beautiful club overlooks the cobalt sea and is smugly enclosed by beautiful pine tree groves. It is open all year long. Roca Llisa has qualified instructors to assist with inexperienced golfers who are just learning the sport. There is a pro-shop on site, though individuals may want to venture over to the Ibiza Golf Club for dining and hotel accommodations.

Just north of the Ibiza town of San Miguel, there are tapas restaurants that sit just atop a hill, and just at the entrance of one of the islands most popular tourist attractions, the Caves Can Marca. One of the aspects of this island that draws people staying in the best hotels, Ibiza views…and the site of the caves has one of the most spectacular views of the island and of the bay of San Miguel. There are many different species living on the hill and along the path leading to the entrance, one of the most unique being the Muradensis Lizard.
These caves were formed over 100,000 years ago and have since weathered the hot, tropical environment of Ibiza. Once inside the caves, one will notice that most of the internal walls have become fossilized, with the deepest of the galleries filled with stalactites that are still in the process of forming, similar to the deeper caves in the United States Yellow Stone National Park. This site was first discovered by and used by smugglers. They would lift their goods from the sea, and store them in the caves. Many of the markings left by the smugglers are still found on the walls today. Most of them are markings on the walls with the directions of the exits, should an emergency occur, or should they be found out.
This has been a site rich in archaeological artifacts, fauna and fossils of animals. Researchers have reconstructed some of the water ways, water falls, and the pools that were responsible for the formation of the caves. The incredible formations of the rocks and the amazing geological structure has now become a bit commercialized. While some are historically illustrated, others are lit with colored lights and have sound effects as part of the tour. This is one of the most interesting sites on the island, and a perfect day trip to take to get out of the city and enjoy a bit of the incredible landscapes of Ibiza.
